In August 2016, MDPI, a Swiss scholarly open access publisher, experienced a data breach when 17.5GB of data was accessed from an unprotected MongoDB instance. The breach involved email exchanges between MDPI and their authors and reviewers. MDPI confirmed the system was secured afterward and deemed subscriber notification unnecessary.
